Wisdom Teeth Removal in Box Hill: Signs, Process & Recovery
Wisdom teeth – the third molars at the back of your mouth usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25. For some people they emerge without trouble; for many, there simply isn’t enough room, leading to pain, infection or crowding. Here’s how to tell if yours may need removing, what the procedure involves, and how to recover comfortably.
Signs your wisdom teeth may need removing
- Pain or aching at the back of the mouth
- Swollen, red or tender gums around an emerging tooth
- Difficulty opening your mouth or jaw stiffness
- Bad breath or an unpleasant taste from trapped food or infection
- Crowding or pressure on neighbouring teeth
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. If yours are healthy, correctly positioned and easy to clean, your dentist may simply monitor them at your regular check-ups.
Why impacted wisdom teeth cause problems
When a wisdom tooth can’t fully emerge, it becomes “impacted.” This can trap bacteria and food beneath the gum, causing pericoronitis (a painful gum infection), decay in the tooth in front, or cysts in more serious cases. Early assessment with an X-ray helps avoid these complications.
What does the procedure involve?
- Assessment: we examine your mouth and take an X-ray to check position and roots.
- Anaesthetic: the area is numbed with local anaesthetic; sedation options may be available for complex cases.
- Removal: the tooth is gently loosened and removed; some cases need a small incision.
- Aftercare: we place gauze and give you clear recovery instructions.
Straightforward extractions are performed in-chair at our clinic. More complex or deeply impacted teeth may be referred to a specialist. See our dental extractions in Box Hill page for more detail.
Recovery tips
- Rest for the first 24 hours and keep your head elevated.
- Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- Eat soft foods and avoid hot drinks, straws and smoking, which can dislodge the clot.
- Rinse gently with warm salty water after 24 hours.
- Take pain relief as directed and keep the area clean.
When to call us: increasing pain after day three, heavy bleeding, fever or spreading swelling can signal dry socket or infection — contact us promptly.
Wisdom teeth and younger patients
Early monitoring is easier when it starts young. Our child and teen dentistry team keeps an eye on developing wisdom teeth so problems are caught early.
